Sleigh Bells singer Alexis Krauss chats with Joey—with photos by Elizabeth Weinberg.
It didn’t take us long to think of Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss while figuring who we wanted to feature in our Joey debut. The first time we met the singer, her band with Derek Miller was hardly yet on anyone’s radar. She was nice, somewhat assuming, if maybe even a bit shy—nothing like the presence that makes itself known onstage during a Sleigh Bells show. Six months later, when we finally saw her perform at a massive South by Southwest showcase, we were blown away. In her element, Alexis commands absolute attention, and for an issue all about cool girls, she seemed perfect. We asked photographer Elizabeth Weinberg to shoot Alexis in New York, at home and in her own wardrobe. (Special thanks to Marni Giannotti, as well, for handling makeup and hair.) Take a look behind the scenes at our first issue’s New Faces portfolio, shot by Alexander Wagner.

Yesterday, we shot the awesome Alexis Krauss of Sleigh Bells for our launch issue.
One of our favorite photographers (not to mention one of PDN’s 30 for 2010) Elizabeth Weinberg shot Alexis on Friday afternoon. “Best hair in indie rock? Possibly,” Elizabeth tweeted just before she sent us this preview from the back of her camera, presumably taken with her new iPhone 4. Also, special thanks to Marni Giannotti for tackling some last-minute makeup and hair.
